November 2021 Newsletter

A Note From Our Principal

Dear Discovery Isle Ted Williams families,

We hope your children enjoyed their fall lessons, pumpkin themed activities, and classroom celebrations last month. Seeing our children enjoy parading in their Halloween costumes and fall attire is one of the highlights of the year for us. Everything is so different this year and we are trying hard to keep our holidays and some traditions alive. We thank you for your support in making this event such a successful one, we could not have done it without your donations for our goodie bags!

November will continue with our Culture of Care with our families and staff. We are looking forward to sharing wonderful experiences with our children. This month we are focusing on gratitude and connecting with our community. Each of our classrooms will be celebrating Thanksgiving with gratitude and care. We have many special activities planned for our students and are looking forward to sharing photos with you all on Links 2 Home.  We will be starting this month our San Diego Food Drive Collection.  Thank you ahead of time for your donations.

Our enrolled parent survey launched in October. If you have not received the email, please let us know so we can request it be resent. The survey provides the opportunity for you to give us feedback anonymously on our strengths and areas we can work on. Survey closes November 19.

Last but very important, please check your child’s LTL folders to find information about upcoming curriculum, parent reports, newsletters, and other important information. Parent reports will be sent home this month and will have a cover sheet where you can request for a parent conference with your child’s teachers.   I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your families and friends.

Melinda Carvalho Principal

Ways to Celebrate American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month
with Your Child

November is American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. It is a time to honor the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of Native Americans. When children acknowledge and appreciate diverse cultures, they are helping to build a community of belonging and inclusion. Celebrate with your child this month by trying some of our ideas below.

  1. Read books about American Indian and Alaska Native characters

Books are a wonderful way to expand your child’s awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures. A few of our favorites to celebrate American Indians and Alaska Natives include, “Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story” by Kevin Noble Maillard, “We are Water Protectors” by Carole Lindstrom, and “Mama, Do You Love Me?” by Barbara M. Joosse.

  1. Make a traditional meal

The diet of American Indians and Alaska Natives included vegetables found on the land around them. This month, cook the traditional ”three sisters” (corn, squash, beans) soup. Encourage your child to help measure, scoop and pour the ingredients.

  1. Explore your region’s resources

Check your local area for festivals or museums with Native American exhibits. Libraries and schools also often host events, such as dance performances and puppet shows for younger children. Afterwards, ask your child about some of the favorite things they saw.

  1. Take a nature walk

Explain to your child that connecting with nature was an important part of Native American culture. November is a great time to get outdoors and take a walk together. Talk about the things you see, hear, and smell around you.
